Each year, I enjoy teaching about Christmas. Although on occasion I’ve taught a holiday series, in general I stick to a simple 18-point lesson that follows the Christmas story all the way through. Since I won’t have opportunity to teach it this year because of a flood of complications, here is the lesson in brief…

1. In the beginning, God had a PLAN. (Genesis 1:1)

Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2. In the beginning was JESUS, the living WORD and the Son of God. (John 1:1)

John 1:1 (KJV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

3. God’s plan had an ANSWER for man’s sin. (Genesis 3:15)

Genesis 3:15 (KJV)

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

4. The answer was Jesus, our Immanuel, “God with US.” (Matthew 1:17-18; Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:24-25)

Matthew 1:17-18 (KJV)

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Isaiah 7:14 (KJV)

14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew 1:24-25 (KJV)

24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

5. Jesus, the Son of God, became FLESH and dwelt among us, so that we could be saved. (John 1:10-14)

John 1:10-14 (KJV)

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

6. Jesus preached a gospel (good news) of REPENTANCE and turning to Him. (Mark 1:14-15)

Mark 1:14-15 (KJV)

14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

7. He came because we are all SINNERS and must face a penalty of death. (Romans 3:23)

Romans 3:23 (KJV)

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

8. Jesus is God’s gift of EVERLASTING life. (John 3:16; Romans 6:23)

John 3:16-17 (KJV)

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Romans 6:23 (KJV) 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

9. God’s gift was complete not through the birth of Jesus, but through His DEATH. (Romans 5:8)

Romans 5:8 (KJV)

8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

10. Through His death, Jesus paid our sin debt, so that by His GRACE are we saved by faith (believing on Him). (Ephesians 2:8; Titus 3:7)

Ephesians 2:8 (KJV)

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Titus 3:7 (KJV)

7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

11. Jesus left a MISSION for all believers, with a promise to help. (Matthew 28:18-20; Philippians 1:6)

Matthew 28:18-20 (KJV)

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Philippians 1:6 (KJV) 6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

12. Jesus gave the church power through the HOLY SPIRIT.(Acts 1:8)

Acts 1:8 (KJV)

8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

13. Jesus continues to intercede and prepare for His RETURN for the church. (John 14:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)

John 14:1-3 (KJV)

1  Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2  In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (KJV)

16  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

14. In the meantime, must remain FAITHFUL to the work of God through Jesus Christ. (Hebrews 10:19-25)

Hebrews 10:19-25 (KJV)

19  Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20  By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21  And having an high priest over the house of God; 22  Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23  Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24  And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25  Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

15. The proof is in the PROPHECY. (Genesis 3:15, Micah 5:2; Isaiah 7:14, 9:6-7, 53:1-12 [written approximately 700 years before the birth of Jesus])

Micah 5:2 (KJV)

2  But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Isaiah 9:6-7 (KJV)

6  For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah 53:1-12 (KJV)

1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

16. Jesus came once as God’s gift to be our SAVIOR. He will come again as KING. (Revelation 22:20-21)

Revelation 22:20-21 (KJV)

20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. 21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

17. Jesus is the BEGINNING and the END of the story and He is what Christmas is all about. (Revelation 22:12-13)

Revelation 22:12-13 (KJV)

12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. 13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

18. Remember the true meaning of Christmas, and why God sent His Son as a Gift… It’s as much about the CROSS as it is about the MANGER.
